This is the organic (non-paid) listing in a search engine results page (SERP)
Since it is non-paid this is often a very valuable listing. There are two main area of focus to help achieve the best results; on page SEO and off page SEO.
On page SEO refers to the organization of content, proper use of meta tags and descriptions, titles, and urls. The first step to optimize a website is to make sure search engines like Google and their web crawling bot ("spiders") understand what your site is about and properly index it.
Off Page SEO is the process that helps move your listing higher in the SERP. There are many approaches and combination of approaches. Mostly it starts with high quality content combined with backlinks. High quality content posted to blogs and as articles creates traffic and engagement which in return create backlinks to your website. The more of these, the higher a page will show in search results.
Although, the exact calculation (often referred to as Google algorithm) is unknown and often changes we know that Google likes authority sites with high Page Rank and we content and backlinks are critical.
